I was at my grandmothers and looking at a painting of an angle and I thought why are all Angels white and are they all baby's or are the adults? So I start to ask questions to my family and friends, and what they thought and I got the different answer from them. My grandmother said the Angels are Gods healers, my mother said they are Gods Warriors and they lead Gods army. My friends had a mix of the same answers and that Angels are babies with fat chubby cheeks. Also when I asked what does an angel looks like an aspect of race? They gave me the same answer as everyone else in North America probably and that they were white and European looking. This fact comes into play because Europeans started to take images of Angels and Jesus and making them look European in style and form. This is the question that I want answered; what race are they and how old are angels? If Europeans were in control of the church at the time that they started to be put on Stainglass windows, do all angels look like this? Is it the fact that because the European church were ran by white people, the images of Angels and Jesus are also white?
People can't say that Angels are any one age whether they're depicted as an adult or that they depicted as a child. There is a book called The Book of Angels by Sophy Burnham and as I looked through her book it said that there are different rankings of Angels but the same consistence all the way through the book until the very end and that is Angels were all white. Then you get to the chapter called My Black Angel which goes on to say that Angels are not just European looking. The way that we have been preprogrammed as Americans to see Angels as European shows that our surroundings definitely controls what you think about religion and race. If the images of Angels were depicted as black for instance we would not even be able to comprehend the fact that they might be white.
Angels in North America and in Europe are seen as white and nothing else. As you look at Latin countries Angels are depicted more Latino or Latina to help the culture connect more with angels and or Jesus. Angels are also in Islam and have a very small artwork of Islamic looking Angels that are more Arabic looking that European-style of what Angels look like. The depiction of Angels in religious aspects whether it be Christianity or any other religion that uses Angels is in fact, up for debate on what they look like because in other countries they are depicted to look how the people in that country.
The way that I look at it is that Angels are angelic figures that are all different and that you cannot say that in Angel is White, Black, or Latin. The thought of age is not relevant. I think Angels are whatever we think them to be whether it's a warrior, healer, a baby, or something out of this world. In the thought of religion and race if we are made in Gods image and were all different and Angels were made by God and why can't Angels be different from what we look like? Also its said that God can speak to all languages in their native talk and that God has an angelic language also. So if God can speak to everyone in their native tongue and speak angelic language why can't angels just be a race all it's own.
