Did I do That?!?

“One of these boys is the child who can see angels. He could stand up right now and tell you what's going on and I'd know you'd just laugh at him. But, when a professional football player drops to one knee to thank God for making a touchdown, nobody laughs at that. Or when a pitcher crosses himself before going to the mound, no one laughs at that either.”

Imagine bunch of hyped up fans watching their team score the winning touchdown in the last seconds of the game. Theyre so pumped up that they don’t even realize they’ve witnessed a religious act right in front of their eyes. On live TV, up close and personal, all of America has witnessed that player point to the sky and make the sign of the cross. A blatant display of religious adherence and identification.

Religion is unavoidable and some acts have become so common they we tend not to notice them. When reciting the pledge of allegiance you express the existence of a God by saying “One nation, Under God”. The money you use everyday states “In God we Trust”. The language we instinctively exclaim such as “God damn it!”, “Thank God!” or “Bless you” acknowledges a God. Religion is subtly incorporated into our everyday lives without us even recognizing. However, some acts are considered more socially acceptable than others. The person wearing a "God ROCKS" shirt is more noticeable than the person with the cross tattoo.

Religious habits can also be expressed by individuals without conscious thought. I asked my friend why she makes the sign of the cross whenever an ambulance passes and she responded “What? Oh I guess its just habit”.

So I challenge you to look for the subtle religious signs in your everyday life. Maybe you see someone else doing it, or even catch yourself in the act! You might find yourself asking, “Did I do that?!?”

  1. I can think of 5 subtle instances in my day already! How meticulous of you to point that out. I'm going to be looking for that from now on.

  2. I agree, I think most people say things every day that involve God without realizing it. Even when people say "thank God" and actually mean it, they might feel like they are about to be judged by those around who don't believe in God.
