Louisiana Voodoo
In class we discussed different
type of Spiritualism and a subtopic of that is Voodoo. Louisiana Voodoo has its
roots that tie back to forms of Christianity and has been traced all the way
from Africa to New Orleans, Louisiana. People who follow this form of what is
known as “New Orleans Voodoo” believe that there is one God who allows people
to live their day-to-day lives without interrupting in any way, nor does he
have control over the spirits that may have their way through their lives. These
spirits, however, have been known to mess with people’s lives in curious ways. They
believe that singing and performing dance rituals can communicate with their
dead ancestors in which they can also interfere with each and every person who
practices Voodoo. Snakes play an important role in this practice. It is a
representation of the Voodoo spirit “Legba.” It is said that the snake
represents “healing knowledge and the connection between Heaven and Earth.”
Now-a-days
Louisiana Voodoo has been known to serve the people answers to certain
questions such as things that may happen in the future through their ancestors
and the spirits that interfere into their lives. Voodoo has been known to “cure
anxiety, addictions, depression,
loneliness, and other ailments” A name that is tied very close in New Orleans
Voodoo is Marie Laveau who practiced Voodoo in her lifetime. Voodoo brought
about the term “gris-gris.” It is said if you keep it with you throughout the
day this gris-gris specific to your wish will help you attain your goal such as
money or love. This also brought about Voodoo dolls. People have been known to
hang voodoo dolls in their houses to “bring protection and prosperity.” There are
also many different types of Voodoo dolls with various sizes and colors each with
their own meaning.
