Question 2

Mountains are typically seen as a holy or sacred space. They epitomize a home of gods, spirits or greater beings, channeling their booming stature and causing people to focus their attention up. In addition, they are completely natural and untouched by human influence. He references Majorie Hope Nicholson's quote about how mountains are "natural cathedrals or natural altars" that people can look up to and admire, with the clouds wrapping around them as a sort of sacrificial representation. He also focuses in on the contrast between "mountain glory" and "mountain gloom". He addresses how Protestants tended to focus on nature and how they practice that through gatherings like retreats in the wilderness. Today, the influence of nature is not as prevalent as in the past, but is used as more of an outlet when the desire to connect with nature arises as opposed to being a priority.
