Lyndon B. Johnson was believed to have started going to the Disciples of Christ church because, of a girl he liked. When he decided to be baptized with the disciples group his mother said it was an act of rebellion. His mother being Baptist and his father beliefs were sometimes nonexistent and other times Christadelphian. There was very little evidence that LBJ was religious. The times that it came out was when in times of need. When LBJ would have to make big decisions or big things would happen he would turn to God. When John F. Kennedy was killed and he was to become the new president he gave a speech saying how he will try to do his best as president and that he is asking for the people's and God's help during this time of need.
Now, Richard Nixon was a bit of a different story. Nixon's mother was Quaker and his father had been taking the kids to hear evangelists speak. Richard Nixon basically grew up in the church. He would play the piano for Sunday school and sang in the choir. He was a man that was deep into his faith. He even instituted an worship service in the White House. Nixon used his religion to help him get more votes for president and it worked until the Watergate Scandal. Then every one began to question his true colors.
These two presidents had very different up brings one grew up religious and the other merely joined a church as an act of rebellion. However, what these two men have in common is how they used religion in the White House. Maybe they didn't do it the exact same way but, the both brought religion in.
