In Kennedy’s speech he argues for a separation of church and
state. He urges people to not use religion as a deciding factor when it comes
to voting on a candidate. As a presidential candidate John F. Kennedy wanted to
speak on the fact that his Catholicism should not hinder him from serving as
the leader of the United States. He believed that a president’s faith should
stay as part of his private life and not influence the way that he leads the
country. He delivered this speech in hopes that it would clear the minds of
American voters and help them to see that it should not matter what religion
the president is.
I think if
a major presidential candidate would make a speech like this today they would receive
backlash for even bringing up their religion. Today people see separating
church and state as an obvious part of modern politics and expect candidates to
not mix their religion into their policy making.
